LEADERSHIP

Elders & Deacons

The Elders and Deacons serve the church body by working alongside the congregation in the various ministries of the church. Our Elders provide spiritual leadership and teaching to equip the church, and Deacons serve those leading and working in our ministries. Elders and Deacons are called by the church based on qualifications found in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1.

Responsibilities of the Elders

Elders are responsible for devoting themselves to prayer and the Word, governing the church, teaching the Word, and tending the flock of God at Trinity. Their responsibilities include …

  • Examining prospective members
  • Overseeing the process of church discipline
  • Examining prospective candidates for the offices of Elder and Deacon
  • Scheduling and moderating business meetings and seeing that official church business is reported and recorded
  • Overseeing the church membership (including oversight of deacons, appointed ministry leaders, and committees)
  • Conducting worship services
  • Administering the ordinances of the Gospel
  • Equipping the membership of the church for the work of the ministry
  • Teaching the whole counsel of God both formally and informally
  • Correcting error
  • Coordinating and promoting the ministries of the church
  • Mobilizing the church for world missions.

Men called as Elders at Trinity shall be qualified for the office as specified in Scripture: 1 Timothy 3:1–7,Titus 1:6–9, and 1 Peter 5:1–4

Role of Deacon

In light of the offices of Elder and Deacon being named in Philippians 1:1 and 1 Timothy 3:8–13, we have established both offices at Trinity. A Deacon at Trinity is an administrative officer within the church who is set apart to ensure that …

  • The Elders are freed up to focus on prayer and ministry of the Word.
  • The practical needs within the church are met at corporate and individual levels.
Appointment, Structure, and Oversight
  • The office of Deacon is primarily an administrative office of equipping others within the church to meet practical needs.
  • We limit the office to people who deploy others in this way.
  • Candidates for the office of Deacon are presented by the Elders and called by the congregation.
  • Deacons operate within the existing structures of the church, under the oversight of the Elders.
